BHP Group (ASX:BHP) teamed up with Spanish renewable energy firm Acciona Energia to study the possibility of a pumped hydro energy storage project at its over 7,000-hectare Mt Arthur Coal site in New South Wales, according to a Wednesday statement by the company.
Due diligence over the next 12 months will assess converting the site, slated for closure in 2030, into a pumped hydro energy storage project, the company said.
Early studies suggest the project could power up to 500,000 homes daily across New South Wales, the company added.
