Rio Tinto's (RIO) and BHP's (BHP) Resolution Copper mining project in Arizona has been granted expedited permitting status by the Federal Permitting Improvement Steering Council, the federal agency said Friday.
The project was designated a "transparency project" under the FAST-41 program, which enables streamlined permitting through enhanced interagency coordination and a publicly accessible permitting timeline.
The designation follows President Donald Trump's executive order directing immediate measures to boost domestic mineral production and reduce reliance on foreign sources.
Located near Superior, Arizona, Resolution Copper is being developed on the site of the historic Magma Copper Mine. In addition to copper, the deposit contains at least seven other strategic and critical minerals, including indium, tellurium, bismuth, and rhenium, according to Resolution Copper.
US markets were closed Friday for Good Friday.
