Dow (DOW) and X-Energy Reactor applied to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a construction permit to develop a nuclear project in Seadrift, Texas.

The proposed advanced small modular reactor project is supported by the Department of Energy's (DOE) Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program, designed to bolster the rollout of advanced reactors through cost-sharing partnerships with industry, the companies said Tuesday in a statement.

The project is intended to provide Dow's UCC1 Seadrift Operations chemical manufacturing site with power to replace aging energy and steam assets, according to the statement.

Approval for the permit may take up to 30 months, the companies said.

Construction of the proposed project may begin later this decade and open early in next decade, the companies said.
