Boeing (BA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration are assessing a potential focus on thin-wing technology research while pausing work on the X-66 flight demonstrator, the agency said Thursday.
Boeing's proposal for a new approach to the agency's Sustainable Flight Demonstrator project focuses on a ground-based testbed to demonstrate long, thin-wing technology with applications for multiple aircraft configurations, according to the statement.
The agency said development of the X-66 experimental aircraft would "pause for later consideration" based on the testbed results and further truss-based configuration studies.
The X-66 will retain its current design and hardware while the thin-wing technology is being investigated, the agency said.
