As rescue workers continued searching for victims of the D.C. plane collision on Friday, family members of a different aviation tragedy were meeting to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Alaska Airlines Flight 261 crash that killed 88 people aboard.

On Jan. 31, 2000, the Alaska Airlines flight was en route from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to Seattle. Tim Ryan lost his brother, sister-in-law and two nephews on the flight as they traveled to celebrate a nephew's graduation from Washington State University, he said. Over the years, the tragedy created a community, but the news of this week's crash in DC was difficult, he said. "Everyone attending understands the pain of the family's of the victims," Ryan said. "The tone was one of recovery and has turned somber."
