U.K. Economy Has Little Hope of Rapid Turnaround -- Market Talk

0753 GMT - The U.K. economy can't look forward to a revival as the year progresses, Capital Economics' Paul Dales warns after GDP unexpectedly contracted in January. The 0.1% decline in output over the month marks a weak start to the year for an economy that faces higher taxes in April, a gloomy mood in the private sector, and an increasingly cold global backdrop, Dales says. The U.K. can expect economic growth of just 0.1% in the first quarter, and 0.7% for the year as a whole, he tells investors in a note. (joshua.kirby@wsj.com; @joshualeokirby)
