The European Commission conditionally approved French aerospace supplier Safran's planned purchase of a part of Collins Aerospace's business, clearing a key regulatory hurdle for the deal to progress.

The European Union's executive arm said Friday that Safran offered to divest the entirety of its North American trimmable horizontal stabilizer actuator systems business. The watchdog said the concession fully addresses its competition concerns.

"Safran and Collins are two leading suppliers of actuation systems, key equipment for safe and fuel-efficient flights," Teresa Ribera, the EU's chief competition enforcer, said in a statement. She said the decision will allow Safran to widen its portfolio for supplying civil and defense aircraft manufacturers.

"At the same time, Safran's divestment ensures that customers continue benefiting from competitive prices and innovative products," she said.

Earlier Friday, the U.K.'s antitrust watchdog said it provisionally found that the divestment would address its competition concerns and will ask for feedback from third parties.
