Cal-Maine Foods said it is investing $40 million in expanding its cage-free production capabilities to respond to rising consumer demand.

The egg producer on Monday said its board of directors approved the budget for five new cage-free layer houses across its locations in Florida, Utah, Texas and Georgia.

The company plans to start construction by the end of the year and expects the projects to be completed with additional production capacity for about 1 million cage-free layer hens by late summer 2025.

Regarding the remodeling of its of its Tyson Foods facilities in Dexter, Mo., the company said that it will result in about 1.2 million additional free-range hens by fall 2025, with plans to add more capacity in the future.

The investment in additional capacity, which also responds to expanding state requirements for cage-free eggs, comes shortly after Cal-Maine reported that profit and revenue rose sharply in its fiscal first quarter.
