The Philippines is seeking to attract Taiwanese chip manufacturers, such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) (TPE:2330) and United Microelectronics (TPE:2303), to boost its semiconductor industry, Bloomberg News reported Tuesday.
Citing Dan Lachica, head of the Semiconductor and Electronics Industries in the Philippines Foundation, the report said that the country is pursuing equipment and expertise to establish chip fabrication operations.
The association and Philippine officials in Taiwan are working to engage potential partners, the news outlet said.
Lachica proposed that TSMC or UMC consider sending their depreciated equipment to the Philippines, in return for training local workers to be deployed in the Taiwanese firms' global operations, Bloomberg noted.
TSMC did not respond to requests for comment, while UMC declined to address market speculation.
