Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine cruised to re-election for a third term representing Virginia, the Associated Press projected. With 77% of the vote counted, Kaine had 53% of the vote, compared to 47% for Republican challenger Hung Cao.

Kaine's decision to run again gave the Democratic party a boost in its battle to keep control of the Senate. While Virginia is considered a competitive state, Kaine is a popular candidate who handily won re-election in 2018. He initially held off on committing to another run and continues to deal with long-term symptoms from Covid-19. He was Hillary Clinton's running mate in 2016, using his Spanish fluency to try to mobilize Latino voters. Virginia's junior senator, Kaine is known for his unflashy style and being a reliable Democratic vote.
