China Exports Can Remain Pillar of Growth Despite Tariff Risks -- Market Talk

0853 GMT - China's exports seem set to keep being a growth catalyst in 2025 even as mounting risks pose uncertainty, DBS economists say. The paramount threat is trade tensions, and they expect the new U.S. administration and the EU to keep up tariffs against China. But there are several factors that can cushion the impact, Mo Ji and other economists say. Chinese exporters may find opportunities to reroute goods destined for the U.S. via alternative trading partners. The U.S. will likely raise duties on other countries too, diluting the effect on China, which is also better placed to withstand the protectionist climate than it was before, DBS adds. Rising demand from emerging markets plus more stimulus may also help offset the potential loss of trade income from the U.S., DBS says. (fabiana.negrinochoa@wsj.com)
