Investors in Tuya Inc. (NYSE:TUYA) had a good week, as its shares rose 7.4% to close at US$1.59 following the release of its quarterly results. The results were positive, with revenue coming in at US$82m, beating analyst expectations by 8.1%. The analysts typically update their forecasts at each earnings report, and we can judge from their estimates whether their view of the company has changed or if there are any new concerns to be aware of. So we collected the latest post-earnings statutory consensus estimates to see what could be in store for next year.

NYSE:TUYA Earnings and Revenue Growth November 20th 2024

Taking into account the latest results, the most recent consensus for Tuya from six analysts is for revenues of US$334.6m in 2025. If met, it would imply a solid 19% increase on its revenue over the past 12 months. Tuya is also expected to turn profitable, with statutory earnings of US$0.01 per share. Yet prior to the latest earnings, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of US$329.8m and losses of US$0.02 per share in 2025. While there's been no material change to the revenue estimates, there's been a pretty clear upgrade to earnings estimates, with the analysts expecting a per-share profit compared to previous expectations of a loss. So it seems like the latest results have led to a significant increase in sentiment for Tuya.

There's been no major changes to the consensus price target of US$2.61, suggesting that the improved earnings per share outlook is not enough to have a long-term positive impact on the stock's valuation. Fixating on a single price target can be unwise though, since the consensus target is effectively the average of analyst price targets. As a result, some investors like to look at the range of estimates to see if there are any diverging opinions on the company's valuation. There are some variant perceptions on Tuya, with the most bullish analyst valuing it at US$2.93 and the most bearish at US$2.00 per share. There are definitely some different views on the stock, but the range of estimates is not wide enough as to imply that the situation is unforecastable, in our view.

Another way we can view these estimates is in the context of the bigger picture, such as how the forecasts stack up against past performance, and whether forecasts are more or less bullish relative to other companies in the industry. It's clear from the latest estimates that Tuya's rate of growth is expected to accelerate meaningfully, with the forecast 15% annualised revenue growth to the end of 2025 noticeably faster than its historical growth of 6.8% p.a. over the past five years. Other similar companies in the industry (with analyst coverage) are also forecast to grow their revenue at 12% per year. Tuya is expected to grow at about the same rate as its industry, so it's not clear that we can draw any conclusions from its growth relative to competitors.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that there's been a clear step-change in belief around the business' prospects, with the analysts now expecting Tuya to become profitable next year. They also reconfirmed their revenue estimates, with the company predicted to grow at about the same rate as the wider industry. There was no real change to the consensus price target, suggesting that the intrinsic value of the business has not undergone any major changes with the latest estimates.

Keeping that in mind, we still think that the longer term trajectory of the business is much more important for investors to consider. We have forecasts for Tuya going out to 2026, and you can see them free on our platform here.
