A diverse portfolio of stocks will always have winners and losers. Of course, the aim of the game is to pick stocks that do better than an index fund. One such company is Kaiser Aluminum Corporation (NASDAQ:KALU), which saw its share price increase 36% in the last year, slightly above the market return of around 31% (not including dividends). In contrast, the longer term returns are negative, since the share price is 20% lower than it was three years ago.
So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During the last year Kaiser Aluminum grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 255%. This EPS growth is significantly higher than the 36% increase in the share price. So it seems like the market has cooled on Kaiser Aluminum, despite the growth. Interesting.
The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).
We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Kaiser Aluminum's TSR for the last 1 year was 41%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
We're pleased to report that Kaiser Aluminum shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 41% over one year. Of course, that includes the dividend. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 2% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Kaiser Aluminum (at least 2 which can't be ignored) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
