Air Canada is revising its fare structure in a move it says brings it into line with other carriers in the country and will see flyers paying for a lowest-priced tickets having to check carry-on baggage on North American routes and sunnier destinations from Florida to the Caribbean.

The flag carrier said Wednesday its basic fare passengers buying tickets after Jan. 2 will be able to bring on board one small personal item like a purse or computer bag but will need to check all larger items and pay standard fees for each bag.

Basic fare passengers will continue to have seats assigned unless they pay a fee to pick a seat, and from Jan. 21 will be charged for any seat change.

Air Canada's Star Alliance Gold and Aeroplan premium credit cardholders will still be entitled to one carry-on bag, the airline said.

At the same time, Air Canada said it will lift the checked baggage allowance for customers traveling worldwide on its comfort economy fare, to two complimentary bags from Jan. from only one bag currently.

The changes will better distinguish fare brands, the airline said.
