The E. coli outbreak caused by onions served at McDonald's (MCD) that sickened more than 100 people in 14 states and sent 34 to the hospital earlier this year is officially over, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Tuesday.
Epidemiologic and traceback data found that fresh, slivered onions served at the food chain were the likely source of the outbreak, the federal health agency said in an update posted to its website.
An older adult in Colorado died from E. coli and another four people developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious condition that can cause kidney failure, due to the Sept. 12 to Oct. 21 outbreak, the CDC probe found.
Overall, 104 people were infected, the agency said, acknowledging the true number of people affected was likely much higher because many recovered without receiving medical care and were not tested for the bacteria strain.
