TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the Jakarta Manpower, Transmigration and Energy Agency, Hari Nugroho, said that the Jakarta government will issue a circular containing an appeal to work from home (WFH) if flooding occurs during working days. This policy is in accordance with the early warning from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) regarding extreme weather in Jakarta and its surroundings until December 15.

"If there is indeed a flood, we will issue a circular like during the COVID-19 pandemic. We will make a circular to offices so that later from the perspective of employers and workers it will be clear," said Nugroho in Jakarta on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, as quoted by Antara.

The BMKG team previously warned about the peak of extreme weather over the next few days in Jabodetabek. Rainfall that could reach 100 millimeters is considered necessary for the public to be aware of. The early warning was initially only for December 7-8, before finally being extended until December 15.

To anticipate flooding, the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) will hold weather engineering starting today, Thursday, December 12, 2024. The weather modification operation (OMC) on December 12-14 is targeted to reduce the intensity of rain, so that it can reduce the risk of flooding.

Acting (Pj) Governor of Jakarta Teguh Setyabudi previously mentioned the consideration of implementing WFH during floods. This policy will likely be applied to school students to state civil servants (ASN), but it could also be applied to employees of other institutions.

The Trigger for Rain This Week

A number of atmospheric phenomena affect weather patterns in Indonesia until December 16. These atmospheric conditions encourage the formation of rain clouds in various regions, especially in central and eastern Indonesia.

The first phenomenon is the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) which is currently actively crossing, especially in phase 5 or the central and eastern areas of Indonesia. "MJO activity plays an important role in increasing the growth of rain clouds," reads the weather information on the official BMKG Instagram account, on December 10.

This 30-40 day intra-seasonal activity will cause intensive rain to fall in several areas, starting from northern Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Bali-Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, to Papua. BMKG also detected Rossby, Kelvin, and Low Frequency waves which also increase the potential for rain.
