Astrana Health (NASDAQ:ASTH) sheds 12% this week, as yearly returns fall more in line with earnings growth

Astrana Health, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASTH) shareholders might understandably be very concerned that the share price has dropped 31% in the last quarter. But the silver lining is the stock is up over five years. However we are not very impressed because the share price is only up 100%, less than the market return of 103%. Unfortunately not all shareholders will have held it for five years, so spare a thought for those caught in the 44% decline over the last three years: that's a long time to wait for profits.

While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During five years of share price growth, Astrana Health achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 59% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 15% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market has become relatively pessimistic about the company.

A Different Perspective

Astrana Health provided a TSR of 2.2% over the last twelve months. But that was short of the market average. It's probably a good sign that the company has an even better long term track record, having provided shareholders with an annual TSR of 15% over five years. Maybe the share price is just taking a breather while the business executes on its growth strategy. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Astrana Health better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk.
