Ganfeng Lithium (SHE:002460, HKG:1772) subsidiary GFL International commenced the operation of phase 1 of its Goulamina spodumene lithium mine in Mali on Sunday, according to a same-day filing with the Hong Kong Exchange.
The lithium mine is among the largest in Africa spanning 100 square kilometers.
The mine has an explored ore resource of 211 million tons, equivalent to 7.1 million tons of lithium carbonate equivalent at an average lithium oxide grade of 1.37%, the filing said.
Phase 1 of the project will have a production capacity of 506,000 tons of lithium concentrate, with phase 2 expandable to 1 million tons of lithium concentrate, the filing said.
The project will help with the company's lithium salt production line and boost self-sufficiency, the filing said.
Shares fell 2% in Hong Kong and Shenzhen during Monday's afternoon trading.
