Marriott International (MAR) and its subsidiary Starwood Hotels Worldwide have been ordered by the US Federal Trade Commission to improve data security measures after three data breaches exposed personal information of over 344 million customers, the regulator said Friday.
Marriott and Starwood must implement a comprehensive information security program to protect customer information, adopt policies to limit data retention, and create a website feature allowing US customers to request deletion of personal data. Marriott must also restore stolen loyalty points upon customer request, the Commission said.
Additionally, the order prohibits Marriott and Starwood from misrepresenting their data practices or security measures.
