TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Chair of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) Faction of the House of Representatives, Sukamta, called on the Indonesian government to take strategic steps to support peace and reconstruction process in Syria after the conflict that has lasted for more than a decade.

The prolonged conflict in the country has caused more than 500,000 fatalities and displaced millions of people. The PKS Faction views that stability in Syria is not only important for the Middle East region, but also for global peace.

This member of Commission I of the House of Representatives considers official recognition of the new Syrian government very important to accelerate national reconciliation.

"This recognition is a form of Indonesia's commitment to supporting a peaceful resolution of the conflict and creating long-term stability. In addition, Indonesia can play a role as a mediator in encouraging inclusive cross-group dialogue," said Sukamta in a written message received by Tempo, Monday, December 23, 2024.

In addition to political reconciliation, Sukamta also highlighted the importance of international assistance in rebuilding basic infrastructure destroyed by the conflict. According to a World Bank report, the cost of Syria's reconstruction is estimated to reach US$250 billion.

"Indonesia can establish bilateral cooperation in education, health, and trade to support this process. As a country with the largest Muslim population, Indonesia has a great opportunity to strengthen relations with Syria," he said.

According to this British-educated doctor, increasing aid for Syrian refugees is still greatly needed by millions of Syrian people and refugees. According to him, Indonesia must show solidarity through more coordinated logistical assistance and health services, both domestically and through cooperation with international organizations.

"This assistance is expected to ease the burden of millions of refugees, including women and children, who are directly affected by the war," he said.

This member of the DPR from the electoral district of D.I. Yogyakarta also reminded Indonesia to continue to prioritize the principle of active freedom in international relations, as regulated in Law Number 37 of 1999, namely to be a pioneer of world peace with an inclusive approach to prevent further radicalization in Syria.
