OTTAWA-Canada's antitrust watchdog says it is suing telecom and cable company Rogers Communications, alleging misleading advertising about its wireless data plans.
In a statement, Canada's Competition Bureau alleged that advertising by Rogers "creates the false or misleading impression" that customers are eligible for limitless data. Instead, the bureau said, caps on data usage are imposed once certain thresholds are passed.
"Canadians need accurate and truthful information when purchasing goods and services especially essential services like wireless data plans," said Matthew Boswell, the head of the antitrust watchdog.
In a statement, Toronto-based Rogers said it will fight the lawsuit.
Rogers said its wireless advertising "is clear and truthful." It added its wireless data plans represent the norm in Canada and the bureau's decision to single out Rogers after five years is quite concerning.
