(Bloomberg) -- New Yorkers were treated to a white Christmas Eve as light snow fell across the city, but most of it will melt away by Wednesday morning, forecasters said.

“It’ll coat things and make it pretty, but it won’t stick around for long,” said Tony Fracasso, a meteorologist with the US Weather Prediction Center.

Less than an inch (2.5 centimeters) fell in the city, and with a forecast high of 37F (2.8C) Tuesday in Central Park, Fracasso expected the snow to disappear by evening. “It’ll maybe stick around in the shadows, but I wouldn’t count on it,” he said. No major travel impacts from the snow were reported.

Christmas Day should bring New York sunshine and high temperatures just above freezing, according to the National Weather Service. Heavy rain and mountain snow will return to the West Coast Wednesday night, and showers and thunderstorms are developing over portions of the south-central states from Texas to Missouri, according to the Weather Prediction Center.
