AML3D positions self as node in AUKUS submarine network

AML3D (ASX:AL3) has outlined its desire to become a node in the AUKUS network, now making parts for the nuclear submarine program.

That program sees Australia acquiring Virginia-class submarines in the coming decades, though not any time soon. The ambitious multi-billion dollar program ultimately points to a symbolic and material rejuvenation of ‘allied’ ties in the backdrop of 2020’s geopolitics, by and large thought of as a kind of ‘second cold war.’

AML3D, for its part, confirmed on Monday its production of copper-nickel based tailpiece parts for the subs using its in-house additive manufacturing (3D printing) capacity.

Testing is being carried out and the company expects installation in 2025.

“AML3D has been working with the U.S. Navy and its partners for close to two years. In that time, we have created a successful model that includes cross-continental coordination, information sharing, and the deployment of our ARCEMY advanced 3D metal printing technology across a network of U.S. defense [applications],” company CEO Sean Ebert said.

“We have also completed several alloy testing and characterisation programs including copper-nickel, which allows us to supply components to the U.S. nuclear submarine program.”

Also among the company’s relative claims to fame on Monday: Whereas traditional manufacturing would reportedly see a copper-nickel submarine tailpiece take 17 months to manufacture, AML3D can do it in five weeks.

One overhanging question relevant for shareholders here is whether or not Australia can sort out the litany of issues in its shipbuilding industry to meet the program timelines – or at least effectively mask them.

Then there’s the fact Monday’s order reflects a value under $200,000.

AL3 last traded at 19.5cps.
