The country honors the former president, who died on Dec. 29 at age 100, with an official state funeral at the National Cathedral on Thursday. A private interment in Plains, Ga., is set to follow.

The U.S. will honor former President Jimmy Carter, who died on Dec. 29 at age 100, with an official state funeral on Thursday. President Joe Biden has declared Thursday a national day of mourning.

That means federal institutions, financial and otherwise, will be closed or operating on reduced schedules. That includes the stock markets. Here's what you should know.

Will the stock and bond markets be closed?

Both the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq will be closed for trading on Thursday and will resume their normal schedules on Friday. Bond markets are set to close early on Thursday, at 2 p.m. Eastern time.

Trading of energy and metals futures will operate on regular hours on Thursday, according to CME Group.

There's a tradition going back to Abraham Lincoln of the stock market shutting down in recognition of the death of a president, according to the Associated Press. The last time this occurred was when former President George H.W. Bush died in 2018.

Carter served one term, from 1977 to 1981. His major achievements included the Camp David peace agreement between Israel and Egypt; he also focused on energy conservation and human rights, including election monitoring, mainly overseas. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 in recognition of his humanitarian and peace-related work during his busy postpresidential life.

During his term as president, Carter dealt with issues including high inflation and energy prices, as well as the Iran hostage crisis, which remained unresolved until just after Carter's successor, Ronald Reagan, was sworn into office.

What else will be closed?

In his executive order, President Biden declared that all "executive departments and agencies of the Federal Government shall be closed on January 9, 2025, as a mark of respect for James Earl Carter, Jr., the thirty-ninth President of the United States."

The U.S. Postal Service will suspend regular mail delivery on Thursday, and postal facilities will generally be closed.

When will the funeral take place? And how can you watch it?

The funeral is set for 10 a.m. Eastern time Thursday at the Washington National Cathedral. It will be livestreamed on the cathedral's YouTube channel, and major television networks also plan to cover the event.
