Huntsman (NYSE:HUN) shareholders are up 10% this past week, but still in the red over the last three years

This week we saw the Huntsman Corporation (NYSE:HUN) share price climb by 10%. But that doesn't help the fact that the three year return is less impressive. After all, the share price is down 50% in the last three years, significantly under-performing the market.

On a more encouraging note the company has added US$287m to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the three-year loss for shareholders.

Given that Huntsman didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

Over the last three years, Huntsman's revenue dropped 11% per year. That's not what investors generally want to see. The stock has disappointed holders over the last three years, falling 14%, annualized. That makes sense given the lack of either profits or revenue growth. However, in this kind of situation you can sometimes find opportunity, where sentiment is negative but the company is actually making good progress.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for Huntsman the TSR over the last 3 years was -44%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

Huntsman shareholders are down 20% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 26%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 1.0% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Huntsman better, we need to consider many other factors. Case in point: We've spotted 3 warning signs for Huntsman you should be aware of, and 2 of them are potentially serious.
