The National Football League (NFL) once again is extending its international push, announcing that the Miami Dolphins will play a game next season in Madrid, two days after touting an Indianapolis Colts game in Berlin.
The league announced Friday that the Dolphins will be the "designated," or nominal home, team for the game played at soccer powerhouse Real Madrid's Bernabéu Stadium in 2025. The Colts on Wednesday were announced as the designated team for the Berlin game, and the New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Cleveland Browns will be the home teams in the league's three games set to be played in London.
The Madrid matchup will be the NFL's first regular-season game in Spain after expanding its international footprint to Mexico, Germany, and Brazil in recent years. The NFL launched its "International Series" in 2007 with a Dolphins-New York Giants game in London.
The opponents and official dates of the international games will be announced with the full 2025 season schedule later this year. Starting in 2025, the NFL can schedule up to eight regular-season games internationally.
Other major North American sports leagues have also extended their global efforts in recent years, with Major League Baseball (MLB) playing in South Korea, Mexico, the U.K., and the Dominican Republic last season. The National Basketball Association (NBA) played preseason games in Abu Dhabi and Montreal in 2024, and has also hosted regular-season games in Mexico City and Paris in recent years.
