Over a Thousand US Flights Cancelled as Historic Winter Storm Spreads

Flights continued to be cancelled in the U.S. on Wednesday, as the historicwinter storm that hit Louisiana, Texas and other Gulf Coast states continued spreading for a second day.

As many as 69% of departures out of New Orleans Wednesday have been cancelled. So far today there have been 1,292 U.S. flight cancellations within, into, or out of the United States and more than 900 delays, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware.

That followed 2,347 cancellations within, into, or out of the United States and 4,723 delays Tuesday.

Houston Airports Due to Reopen

Airports in Houston suspended operations Tuesday but are due to reopen at 10:00 a.m. Central Standard Time, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Precipitation from the storm is set to continue through Wednesday morning for the Gulf Coast and Southeast “with areas of heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain expected from northern Florida northeast to the North Carolina Outer Banks,” according to the National Weather Service.

Southwest Airlines (LUV)  already has canceled more than 200 flights Wednesday, and United Airlines (UAL), American Airlines Group (AAL), and Delta Air Lines (DAL) have scrapped more than 100 each, the FlightAware data showed.
