Tariffs Threaten European Beauty, US Personal Hygiene Companies -- Market Talk

1556 ET - Beauty companies would be one of the consumer sector most impacted by potential tariff hikes in both Europe and China under Donald Trump's government, Citi analyst Filippo Falorni tells WSJ. Companies like Coty, Interparfums and Coty have most of their perfumes manufactured in Europe, so they're in a riskier position that other peers such as Estée Lauder, Falorni says. Some other implications for the industry in China is the outsourcing of ingredients, applicators and packaging, Falorni says. Outside tariff hikes, Procter & Gamble and Colgate-Palmolive could go through significant changes on a potential ban of fluoride, even if it gets only restricted for kids oral hygiene products, Falorni says. "A full ban would be really severe," he says, adding that the companies would have to market the products differently and book higher production and substitution costs as near-term disruptions.
