The European stock markets closed mixed in Monday trading as The Stoxx Europe 600 was off 0.04%, Germany's DAX declined 0.54%, the FTSE 100 in London edged 0.02% higher, France's CAC 40 was down 0.27%, and the Swiss Market Index rose 1.05%.
Sentiment among German companies improved slightly in January rising to 85.1 points on the ifo Business Climate Index from 84.7 points in December. The ifo Institute attributed the increase mainly to "a more positive assessment of the current situation." At the same time, expectations continued to deteriorate as companies continued to be pessimistic, the economic research institution said.
And in corporate news, Tesla is suing the European Commission, according to the website of Court of Justice of the European Union. Tesla, along with Chinese carmakers BYD, SAIC, and Volvo-owner Geely, are challenging the European Union's duties on made-in-China electric vehicles, multiple media outlets reported Monday. Tesla did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
Diageo said in a statement Sunday that it has no intention to sell either its Guinness brand or stake in Moet Hennessy. The British alcoholic beverage company said it released the statement in response to "recent media speculation" and that it will hold its Guinness investor and analyst day in May.
GSK said Monday that the European Medicines Agency has agreed to review its prefilled syringe version of Shingrix, a vaccine for the prevention of shingles. The British pharmaceutical company said the prefilled syringes eliminate the need to mix separate vials before injections. Shares of GSK were up 3.4% in London.
MYT Netherlands Parent said Monday it plans to change its name to LuxExperience as part of its proposed acquisition of Yoox Net-A-Porter. The German luxury e-commerce company said it will continue trading on the New York Stock Exchange under its new name and new ticker LUXE, pending approval.
