USAA sues Regions Bank over mobile banking patents

By Blake Brittain

Jan 28 (Reuters) - Financial services provider United Services Automobile Association sued competitor Regions Bank in Texas federal court on Tuesday for allegedly violating its patent rights in mobile check-deposit technology.

The lawsuit accused Regions' mobile banking app of infringing four USAA patents covering remote deposit inventions developed for U.S. military members living abroad.

The complaint is the latest in a series of patent lawsuits brought by USAA against other financial services providers over its technology. San Antonio-based USAA has previously won more than $500 million in related cases against Wells Fargo and PNC Bank and settled similar disputes with banks including Truist.

Regions spokesperson Jeremy King declined to comment on the lawsuit. USAA Vice President Nathan McKinley said in a statement that the company has "signed many license agreements and look[s] forward to working with more banks and credit unions to create mutually beneficial license agreements."

USAA, which caters to military service members and their families, said it created its technology in the mid-2000s to allow its members to deposit checks from abroad. Its lawsuit said the mobile deposit function of Birmingham, Alabama-based Regions' smartphone application infringes USAA's patents.

USAA asked the court for an unspecified amount of monetary damages.

The case is United Services Automobile Association v. Regions Financial Corp, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, No. 2:25-cv-00082.

For USAA: Jason Sheasby, Lisa Glasser, Rebecca Carson and Tony Rowles of Irell & Manella
