Possible Bearish Signals With Chubb Insiders Disposing Stock

Simply Wall St.

Many Chubb Limited (NYSE:CB) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Chubb

The Executive Chairman & CEO, Evan Greenberg, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$18m worth of shares at a price of US$290 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of US$276. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. Given that the sale took place at around current prices, it makes us a little cautious but is hardly a major concern.

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It's great to see that Chubb insiders own 0.5% of the company, worth about US$495m. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
