International Business Machines (IBM) and Telefonica's Telefonica Tech unit said Thursday they have partnered to develop security systems for future quantum computing threats.

They plan to integrate IBM's quantum-safe technology with Telefonica Tech's expertise in managed and professional cybersecurity services, the companies said.

Planned solutions will help protect companies and public agencies from post-quantum security risks by using new cryptography standards set by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology, they added.

The deal also includes setting up a joint use case office focused on secure communications, adapting to new secure algorithms, and protecting critical environments, according to the companies.

IBM has already deployed its infrastructure at Telefonica's Madrid headquarters, featuring an IBM LinuxONE system with end-to-end encryption and quantum-safe cryptography, along with IBM Storage and other advanced security tools, IBM and Telefonica said.

Shares of IBM were up more than 14% in recent trading.
