Cigna launched a multi-year effort aiming to make access to care easier, among several areas of focus, a move that comes weeks after an insurance executive was killed as a broader debate on health care in the U.S. has unfurled.
"The health care system in America needs to be better, and we have challenged ourselves to help lead and drive systemic change," said Chief Executive David Cordani.
Cigna said its efforts would include providing customers with better support and be more transparent about its services.
The health insurer on Thursday reported unexpectedly weak earnings due to higher healthcare costs in a segment of its insurance business.
The move by Cigna comes in the weeks since Luigi Mangione in December gunned down UnitedHealth Chief Executive Brian Thompson. Mangione pleaded "not guilty" later in the month to state murder charges in the killing.
