Many investors define successful investing as beating the market average over the long term. But its virtually certain that sometimes you will buy stocks that fall short of the market average returns. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term Castle Biosciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSTL) shareholders, since the share price is down 34% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return of around 36%. Furthermore, it's down 15% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last three years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

Given that Castle Biosciences only made minimal earnings in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue to gauge its business development. As a general rule, we think this kind of company is more comparable to loss-making stocks, since the actual profit is so low. For shareholders to have confidence a company will grow profits significantly, it must grow revenue.

Over three years, Castle Biosciences grew revenue at 44% per year. That is faster than most pre-profit companies. The share price drop of 10% per year over three years would be considered disappointing by many, so you might argue the company is getting little credit for its impressive revenue growth. It seems likely that actual growth fell short of shareholders' expectations. Before considering a purchase, investors should consider how quickly expenses are growing, relative to revenue.

A Different Perspective

Castle Biosciences provided a TSR of 21% over the last twelve months. But that return falls short of the market. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it is certainly better than the yearly loss of about 1.7% endured over half a decade. It could well be that the business is stabilizing.
