Redfin Insider Ups Holding During Year

Simply Wall St.
02-06

From what we can see, insiders were net buyers in Redfin Corporation's (NASDAQ:RDFN ) during the past 12 months. That is, insiders acquired the stock in greater numbers than they sold it.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Redfin Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when President Glenn Kelman bought US$196k worth of shares at a price of US$6.41 per share. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (US$7.87), we still think insider buying is a positive. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It appears that Redfin insiders own 4.3% of the company, worth about US$43m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Redfin Insiders?

The fact that there have been no Redfin insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. On a brighter note, the transactions over the last year are encouraging. Insiders do have a stake in Redfin and their transactions don't cause us concern. In addition to knowing about insider transactions going on, it's beneficial to identify the risks facing Redfin.
