This engine is designed as a flexible solution to support renewable sources like wind and solar, offsetting their intermittent generation. It offers over 51% engine efficiency, reduced emissions, and can quickly ramp up to full power within two minutes. Wärtsilä stresses the importance of such balancing engines in achieving a net zero power system, as highlighted in their report, "Crossroads to Net Zero". The 46TS engine will be available from 2025, with its first order placed for a hybrid power project in Kazakhstan, integrating with wind and solar power systems.
