Should You Be Adding J.Jill (NYSE:JILL) To Your Watchlist Today?

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like J.Jill (NYSE:JILL). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

J.Jill's Improving Profits

In the last three years J.Jill's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. J.Jill's EPS has risen over the last 12 months, growing from US$2.32 to US$2.74. This amounts to a 18% gain; a figure that shareholders will be pleased to see.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. J.Jill reported flat revenue and EBIT margins over the last year. That's not a major concern but nor does it point to the long term growth we like to see.
