If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So, when we ran our eye over Global Industrial's (NYSE:GIC) trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for Global Industrial, this is the formula:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.25 = US$88m ÷ (US$532m - US$178m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).

Therefore, Global Industrial has an ROCE of 25%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the Trade Distributors industry average of 12%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Global Industrial Tell Us?

It's hard not to be impressed by Global Industrial's returns on capital. The company has consistently earned 25% for the last five years, and the capital employed within the business has risen 55% in that time. Now considering ROCE is an attractive 25%, this combination is actually pretty appealing because it means the business can consistently put money to work and generate these high returns. If Global Industrial can keep this up, we'd be very optimistic about its future.

The Bottom Line On Global Industrial's ROCE

In summary, we're delighted to see that Global Industrial has been compounding returns by reinvesting at consistently high rates of return, as these are common traits of a multi-bagger. However, over the last five years, the stock has only delivered a 35% return to shareholders who held over that period. So because of the trends we're seeing, we'd recommend looking further into this stock to see if it has the makings of a multi-bagger.

On a final note, we've found 1 warning sign for Global Industrial that we think you should be aware of.
