TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Yogyakarta has issued an early warning of potential high waves occurring from February 13-17, 2025, in all Yogyakarta waters.

Head of the Meteorological Station of BMKG Yogyakarta, Warjono, revealed that based on the agency's analysis, waves of 2.5 to 4 meters high are likely to occur in the waters of Bantul, Kulon Progo, and Gunungkidul Yogyakarta until early next week.

This was known after studying synoptic conditions or simultaneous observations of several factors that influence weather conditions at a certain time. "From the latest synoptic conditions, the movement of Tropical Cyclone Zelia in the northwest Indian Ocean off the northwest of Australia is currently observed," said Warjono on Thursday, February 13, 2025.

The movement of the cyclone has resulted in the accumulation of air masses in the Java region and its surroundings, triggering an increase in rainfall intensity, especially in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. "This tropical cyclone indirectly has the potential to trigger an increase in wave height of 2.5 to 4 meters in Yogyakarta waters," said Warjono.

These high waves also pose a risk to maritime safety. Warjono stated that fishers need to be cautious if the wind speed reaches 15 knots and the wave height reaches 1.25 meters.

As for barges, they must be cautious if the wind speed reaches 16 knots and the wave height reaches 1.5 meters.

Warjono revealed that until February 13, 2025, some areas of Yogyakarta were categorized as no rain/slightly measurable rain with rainfall of 0-20 millimeters per day. The highest rainfall of 11 millimeters was recorded at the Temon Rain Post in Kulon Progo Regency.

Areas that are still intensively showered with rain almost every day, especially the Mount Merapi area, particularly near the peak covering the districts of Cangkringan, Turi, and Pakem in Sleman Regency.

The head of the Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center, or BPPTKG, Agus Budi Santoso, revealed that on Thursday, from 13:48 WIB until late afternoon, there was rain at the peak of Mount Merapi.

"Rain showers the peak of Merapi with an intensity of 2-16 mm/hour, remain vigilant of the danger of volcanic mudflows in rivers originating from Merapi and the potential danger of pyroclastic flows in the area," he said.
