MW Boeing's Stephanie Pope, once on CEO shortlist, is out as COO

By Claudia Assis

Pope remains CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes

Boeing Co. said late Tuesday that Stephanie Pope, once on a short list to become the aerospace and defense giant's chief executive, is no longer its chief operating officer.

In a terse filing with U.S. securities regulators, Boeing $(BA)$ said that Pope no longer holds the COO title as of last Wednesday, Feb. 19. Pope remains an executive vice president and chief executive of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, the company said.

Boeing ultimately chose industry veteran Kelly Ortberg as its CEO in July. Ortberg was a former head of Boeing supplier Rockwell Collins, and oversaw that company's integration with the former United Technologies and RTX until he retired in 2021.

The nomination of Ortberg earned praise on Wall Street, with one analyst saying at the time that he would be able to cast a wider net for talent than a Boeing insider could.

Boeing did not immediately reply to a request for comment, and it was unclear whether it would name another COO.
