Why We Like The Returns At Cabot (NYSE:CBT)

Simply Wall St.
02-26

If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. And in light of that, the trends we're seeing at Cabot's (NYSE:CBT) look very promising so lets take a look.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?

If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Cabot is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.22 = US$647m ÷ (US$3.6b - US$747m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024).

So, Cabot has an ROCE of 22%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 8.3% earned by companies in a similar industry.

The Trend Of ROCE

Cabot has not disappointed with their ROCE growth. More specifically, while the company has kept capital employed relatively flat over the last five years, the ROCE has climbed 69% in that same time. So our take on this is that the business has increased efficiencies to generate these higher returns, all the while not needing to make any additional investments. On that front, things are looking good so it's worth exploring what management has said about growth plans going forward.

The Bottom Line On Cabot's ROCE

As discussed above, Cabot appears to be getting more proficient at generating returns since capital employed has remained flat but earnings (before interest and tax) are up. Since the stock has returned a staggering 159% to shareholders over the last five years, it looks like investors are recognizing these changes. In light of that, we think it's worth looking further into this stock because if Cabot can keep these trends up, it could have a bright future ahead.

Like most companies, Cabot does come with some risks, and we've found 1 warning sign that you should be aware of.
