Onvo, a sub-brand of Nio (NYSE: NIO), has launched a flexible battery upgrade service, following the strategy of the Nio main brand.
Onvo announced today that it will gradually open up flexible battery upgrades starting March 1, allowing owners of standard-range models to upgrade their packs to long-range on a daily, monthly or annual basis.
Onvo's standard-range battery pack has a capacity of 60 kWh and provides 555 kilometers of CLTC range for the L60, the brand's only model currently on sale.
Its long-range battery pack has a capacity of 85 kWh and can provide a CLTC range of up to 730 kilometers.
Like Nio's main brand models, the Onvo L60 supports battery swap, making flexible battery upgrades possible.
The flexible upgrade service will be available on a trial basis in 16 cities first starting March 1, Onvo announced on its mobile app.
The brand will gradually increase the number of battery swap stations where the service is available based on the progress of the launch of the 85-kWh long-range battery pack, and expects to open the service nationwide by mid-March.
Upgrades cost RMB 45 ($6.18) per day, RMB 800 per month, or RMB 8,800 per year.
Onvo is offering customers who purchased the standard-range L60 on or before February 28 five vouchers that will allow them to experience five free flexible battery upgrades.
For owners who purchased the long-range L60, Onvo is offering them 4 free battery swaps.
Nio started allowing customers to pay to permanently upgrade their standard-range battery packs to 100-kWh long-range battery packs on November 7, 2020, and on April 16, 2021, it started allowing owners to upgrade on an annual basis.
It started offering monthly battery upgrades on December 5, 2021 and daily upgrades on July 20, 2023.
For the main Nio brand, upgrades cost RMB 50 per day, RMB 880 per month, or RMB 9,800 per year.
Nio usually increases the fees for flexible battery upgrades during peak travel times around major holidays in China.
