Idemitsu Kosan Co.,Ltd (TYO:5019) will build a large-scale lithium sulfide plant at its Chiba Complex, targeting the commercialization of all-solid-state batteries by 2027-2028, according to a Thursday filing on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
The 21.3 billion yen project, backed by a 7.1 billion yen government subsidy, will produce lithium sulfide for solid electrolytes, with output equivalent to 3 GWh of battery storage per year.
Idemitsu, which has worked with sulfur-derived materials since 1994, said its proprietary technology will enable high-purity production.
