The Mosaic Company (NYSE:MOS) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 20th of March to $0.22. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 3.7%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Prior to this announcement, Mosaic's dividend was making up a very large proportion of earnings and perhaps more concerning was that it was 588% of cash flows. This is certainly a risk factor, as reduced cash flows could force the company to pay a lower dividend.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 176.0% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 50%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was $1.00 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was $0.88. Doing the maths, this is a decline of about 1.3% per year. A company that decreases its dividend over time generally isn't what we are looking for.
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. We are encouraged to see that Mosaic has grown earnings per share at 23% per year over the past five years. However, Mosaic isn't reinvesting a lot back into the business, so we wonder how quickly it will be able to grow in the future.
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Mosaic's payments are rock solid. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We don't think Mosaic is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
