U.S. Sen Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is calling out Republicans for what he describes as the “Robin Hood principle in reverse”—taking from working people and the poor to give to billionaires. In recent interviews, Sanders has urged Americans to push back against a Republican-backed budget that he says will hand out massive tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans while slashing essential programs like Medicaid, education, and housing.
Sanders has launched a national tour, focusing on swing districts where Republican members of Congress won by narrow margins. His goal is to mobilize voters and pressure lawmakers to oppose the budget proposal.

"What we’re trying to do now is go to about 15 different congressional districts around the country where Republican members of Congress won by slim margins," Sanders told CNN. "And to make it clear to the people in those districts that they have got to tell their members of Congress... that they cannot support a reconciliation bill, a budget, which gives incredible, massive tax breaks to the richest people in this country at a time when we already have unprecedented income and wealth inequality."
Sanders pointed out that Republicans hold only a three-vote majority in the House of Representatives. That means flipping just a couple of votes could stop the bill in its tracks.
"If we can turn two Republicans around to vote no, for example, against massive tax breaks for billionaires while they cut Medicaid and education... we can make a huge dent in the Trump agenda," he said in an interview with MSNBC..

Sanders warns that beyond tax cuts, there is a broader Republican strategy at play—one that aims to dismantle and privatize key social programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
"At the end of the day, what they want to do is make the case to the American people that the whole government stinks," he said. "Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, all of these programs that help you—they're terrible. And the way forward is to privatize them."
While some may assume Medicaid cuts only affect low-income Americans, Sanders says that's not the case. He points out that Medicaid supports millions of children, community health centers, and even nursing home care for seniors.

"You got a mother or dad who is in a nursing home? Guess what? Two out of three people in nursing homes get supported by Medicaid," he said. "At a time when our healthcare system today is in deep distress... massive cuts to Medicaid will cripple it."
Sanders is clear that most Americans do not support tax cuts for billionaires at the expense of vital programs. "There are very few people in this country who think that at a time of massive income and wealth inequality... that billionaires need a huge tax break," he said. "And at the same time, in order to pay for that tax break, what Trump and the Republican leadership are talking about are horrific cuts to Medicaid, education, housing, and programs that working-class people in this country desperately need."
