With EPS Growth And More, DaVita (NYSE:DVA) Makes An Interesting Case

Simply Wall St.

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like DaVita (NYSE:DVA), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

DaVita's Earnings Per Share Are Growing

Generally, companies experiencing growth in earnings per share (EPS) should see similar trends in share price. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. DaVita managed to grow EPS by 8.0% per year, over three years. While that sort of growth rate isn't anything to write home about, it does show the business is growing.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. It's noted that DaVita's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort our analysis of its margins. The good news is that DaVita is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 2.1 percentage points to 15%, over the last year. Both of which are great metrics to check off for potential growth.

Are DaVita Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$12b company like DaVita. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they have a considerable amount of wealth invested in it, currently valued at US$521m. Holders should find this level of insider commitment quite encouraging, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience their success, or failure, with the stock.

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but shareholders may be wondering if remuneration policies are in their best interest. Well, based on the CEO pay, you'd argue that they are indeed. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to DaVita, with market caps over US$8.0b, is around US$13m.

DaVita's CEO took home a total compensation package worth US$6.7m in the year leading up to December 2023. That comes in below the average for similar sized companies and seems pretty reasonable. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. Generally, arguments can be made that reasonable pay levels attest to good decision-making.

Is DaVita Worth Keeping An Eye On?

As previously touched on, DaVita is a growing business, which is encouraging. Earnings growth might be the main attraction for DaVita, but the fun does not stop there. Boasting both modest CEO pay and considerable insider ownership, you'd argue this one is worthy of the watchlist, at least. What about risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for DaVita (of which 1 is significant!) you should know about.

There's always the possibility of doing well buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But for those who consider these important metrics, we encourage you to check out companies that do have those features.
