That’s really par for the course during an election campaign.But the PM has come under fire for some of the outlets he’s chosen to speak to, specifically podcaster Abbie Chatfield.Anthony Albanese speaks with Abbie Chatfield on her podcast It's a lot Credit: YoutubeSpeaking to Clinton Maynard on 2GB, commentator Lucy Zelić criticised Albanese’s decision to speak with the “morally loose podcaster” (her words, not mine).Lucy Zelić called Abbie Chatfield a “morally loose podcaster” while talking about her interview with Anthony Albanese on 2GB Credit: Nine“I’ve got a host of issues with Abbie Chatfield in terms of her bias that she came into the interview with, saying ‘she doesn’t want Dutton in power’,” Zelić said.“I don’t think our Prime Minister should be aligning himself with somebody that’s openly spruiking her desire to have threesomes and that owns nine vibrators. That’s really disgusting.”To be honest, this sex shaming doesn’t sit well with me, but that’s a different issue.There’s no doubt the PM’s team chose to speak with Chatfield because she was considered a “soft” interview and that’s fine as long as he doesn’t avoid tougher questioning from traditional journalists.Chatfield has more than 500,000 followers on Instagram so provides a large platform for a politician to get their message across. Just like Joe Rogan has changed the game in America, there’s no doubt ‘influencers’ have their place in an election.To suggest otherwise is naive at best, arrogant at worst.LOVE SPORT? GET READY TO PAYHaving free access to tip-tier sport on our television screens is something Australians take for granted, but there are troubling signs that could all soon change. The highly respected boss of FOXTEL, Patrick Delany, has hit out at the anti-siphoning laws he says benefit his commercial competitors (i.e. Seven, Nine and 10).The anti-siphoning laws were introduced in 1992 with the aim “to promote the free availability to audiences throughout Australia of television coverage of events of national importance and cultural significance.”Foxtel CEO Patrick Delany says Australians “are very used to paying for sport” as he pushed for changes to the anti-siphoning list. Credit: DC/AAPIMAGEBasically, it was a way to make sure subscription services didn’t gobble up sporting rights and force consumers to pay to watch them.While over in Las Vegas for Round 1 of the 2025 NRL season, Delany hit out at the laws in an interview with Mumbrella.“They are very, very outdated,” he told the publication.“I think Australians get a lot of their entertainment through digital means. I think Australians are very used to paying for sport.”Some sports maybe, but I don’t think Australians would be too happy if they had to pay to watch the NRL or AFL grand finals.Delany went on to say a subscription service like FOXTEL could provide the same service, if those sports on the anti-siphoning list had to remain free.“And frankly, I don’t see why, if the Australian people and the Australian government think we should have some anti-siphoning, why it is contained to broadcast,” he said.“It should be that if you are willing to provide those items that the Australian government, the Australian people think should be free, then I don’t see why you can’t fulfill that obligation by providing it free digitally.”And, of course, FOXTEL could do that but do you think that would be their long-term game?No, FOXTEL, which has just been bought by sports streaming service DAZN for $3.4b, makes its money by charging subscribers to watch its content (and then throws in ads for an extra hit of revenue).FOXTEL/DAZN know sport is a key driver of subscription growth so if given the opportunity to provide major sports for free, it will only be a matter of time before they push to have those sports behind a paywall.We’re already seeing it on the digital front.The Albanese Government has refused to protect sports on the anti-siphoning list from disappearing behind paywalls on streaming services. There is currently nothing stopping Netflix, Disney+, Foxtel etc from acquiring the digital rights to sports as long as a free-to-air network has the broadcast rights.You might think that is fair enough but when you consider Free TV research shows that “69 per cent of Australians access TV via the internet” and not a traditional arial, it means a lot of people will have no choice but to pay to watch their favourite sports when they can’t access the traditional linear broadcast.Don’t say you haven’t been warned.CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF COLOURAustralian television reached an important milestone over the weekend – it’s been 50 years since we transitioned to colour.On 1 March 1975 a new revolution was beamed into homes around the nation (well, for those who could afford it).Each station had their big moment when the black and white picture changed over to colour (you can see clips in the video player above). Here at 7 colour was embraced in songs, promos and even the logo had a ring of colours around the 7.The 7 logo embraced colour as Australian television transitioned from black and white on 1 March 1975. Credit: SevenBut the best transition I have ever seen anywhere in the world has to go to the ABC and the Aunty Jack team.
