China imposed an import ban on US-based gene sequencer manufacturer Illumina, the Finance Ministry said Tuesday.

The ban will help "safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests," the ministry said.

China's move comes after US President Donald Trump imposed an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods, Reuters reported separately the same day.

China is responsible for 7% of Illumina sales, Reuters said.
