Insiders Could Have Profited By Holding onto DexCom Shares Despite 12% Drop

DexCom, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:DXCM) stock price has dropped 12% in the previous week, but insiders who sold US$16m in stock over the past year have had less luck. The average selling price of US$117 is still lower than the current share price, or in other words, insiders would have been better off holding on to their shares.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At DexCom

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive Chairman, Kevin Sayer, for US$4.0m worth of shares, at about US$134 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$77.84. So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It's great to see that DexCom insiders own 0.3% of the company, worth about US$105m. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
