March 4 - Ahead of the Bermuda Risk Summit taking place next week, John Huff, president and CEO of the Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers (ABIR), shared key insights on the summit’s growing significance as it enters its fourth year.

Reflecting on the event's evolution, Huff told The Insurer: "It was really designed to be an event which focussed on the mid-year renewals, to touch base with our customers and insurers and reinsurers and brokers. But it’s become much more than that as it’s evolved.”

He highlighted the summit's impressive growth, with a significant crowd expected this year, including "a record number of US Insurance Commissioners". According to Huff, the event is continuing to attract a good number of oversea delegates, which he expects to make up more than a third attending this year.

Huff praised the organisers for pulling together “a fantastic set of speakers” who will be covering critical topics over the course of the three-day event.

Similarly to prior years, the event’s opening panel will be led by some of the industry’s most acclaimed CEOs, including Convex’s Stephen Catlin, Aspen’s Mark Cloutier, Arch Capital Group’s Nicolas Papadopoulo and Kathleen Reardon from Hiscox Re & ILS.

"It's truly a view from the top,” said Huff. “You couldn't have a better lineup to kick off the event."

Addressing Bermuda’s competitive position, Huff remarked: "It's top of mind in everything we do, of how we compete every day with jurisdictions around the world." He acknowledged challenges like the new corporate income tax, but emphasised ongoing efforts to keep Bermuda attractive for business around innovation and capital efficiency.

The summit will also feature keynotes from notable figures, including California Commissioner Ricardo Lara, who will discuss the impact of the recent headline-grabbing wildfires; and Jeff Goodell, who will speak on climate change and heat issues.
